The soft look of a gathered skirt is the perfect complement to a slipcover. With the No-Sew Gathered Skirt Kit, it couldn't be easier to make one that is both beautiful and durable.
All you need is a sheet and an iron. You'll cut strips from the length side (selvage edge) of the sheet so the skirt will match the cover. Simply cut 12" strips and seam the strips together. Hem the bottom edges. Apply the No-Sew Skirt tape and run elastic through the tunnels made by tape. Beautiful perfect gathers will almost magically appear! In mere minutes, you're done!
The No-Sew Gathered Skirt tape is washable just like the sheets. The tapes can be resealed with a good steam ironing, if necessary.
- You will need enough 12" strips to make the skirt. Here's how: Measure the distance around your sofa or chair. Write this number down for quick reference. Multiply the number by 2 to determine the inches of fabric you'll need for the gathered skirt. Doubling makes nice, full gathers, just like a professionally-made cover. The skirt will finish a perfect 11".
Example:
Loveseat is 66" wide by 36" deep.
The total distance around the loveseat is 204"
Multiply 204 by 2 equals 408" (34 feet) total
Remember the strips are 12" wide.

Take a moment to make sure that the skirt fabric is going in the same direction as the cover. You want them to match. It never hurts to double check! |
Seam the 12" Strips together
- Bond the vertical edges of the strips together just like you did in making the slipcover.
Hem the Bottom and Sides
- Then use the No-Sew Tape to make a 1/2" hem the bottom edge and sides of your skirt. Use the same hemming technique as you did on the cover.
Applying the No-Sew Gathered Skirt Tape
- With the wrong side of the skirt facing up, fold the top edge over and press a 1/2" crease.With the shiny-side down to the skirt, pin the No-Sew Skirt Tape 1/8" down from the top crease. This will give you a nice, professional-looking finished edge. Now, just iron the tape in place. Use a slow, steady steaming with the iron.
- To finish, cut the elastic to 3/4 (divide by 4, multiply by 3) of the distance around the sofa. Safety pin one end of the elastic to one end of the skirt. Attach a safety pin to the other end of the elastic and work it through the tunnel created by the No-Sew Skirt Tape.
- Once you have drawn the elastic through the tunnel, use safety pins to join the ends of the elastic to complete the gathered skirt. It is a finished circle.
