Step 1: Measuring and cutting

glossary

The No-Sew Curtain Kit makes the same generous two-to-one gathers that professional drapery makers use when they make expensive custom-made curtains!

Tip

Write your measurements down on a piece of paper for easy reference. If you think it will help you visualize the curtain, draw rectangles and mark down the measurements.

Window Measurement

Width:

You need to measure the width of the window and the length of the curtain you want to make.

Measure the width of your window. Multiply this number by 2 to determine the inches of fabric you'll need for the curtain or valance. Doubling makes nice, full gathers.

Length:

Measure the height of your window and decide how long you want the curtain or valance to be. Add 3" total for the top turnover and hem allowance.

Examples:

For a 12" valance, the strips will be cut 15" in length.

A 60" long curtain will be cut 63" in length.

What Size Sheets?

Here are the measurements of standard sheets. Pick the size that will be the best for the width and length you need. Keep in mind whether the sheet is solid or is a print. A print may require more fabric for matching the motif.

Twin

66" X 96"

Full

81" X 96"

Queen

90" X 102"

King

108" X102"

If you do not need to add panels to each other, go to finishing vertical edges.

If you have a wide window and need to "seam" panels together for the desired width, you will need to make a bonded seam. There is no sewing! These seams are securely attached to the panel. This is really easy. You are bonding the two panels together using the seam tape instead of a sewing machine. You will press the 1/2" seam allowance of one panel to itself, then place another line of tape on the turnback and bond the other panel to it. Easy!
